One of the signs of spring in the mountains is the curly little heads of baby ferns poking their heads through the earth, often still covered in snow, toward the Sun's life giving warmth. Ferns are among some of the oldest plant life on Earth, dating back to the Carboniferous Period.
Fossils of ferns can be found all over West Virginia, in shale, limestone, and sandstone. In fact, the ancient tree-sized ferns and other prehistoric plants are what formed the coal that is so essential to our state's economy. All I know is that it's super cool to split a rock apart and find a perfect impression of a fern that hasn't seen the sun in 400 million years!
